The Fisherman
and the Chef
In the summer of 2003 I was introduced to fishing
guide by a mutual friend. A professional fishing guide on Lake
St. Clair for over 25 years. He had invited me out for a day of
fishing and I soon realized his true passion for fishing. I had
learned so much about fishing and the one thing that was the most
prominent, was the attention to every little detail that contributes
to successful fishing. I had gone out fishing several more
times always returning with a boat load of fish. I would clean and
prepare the fresh fish that I would cook for our dinner that
evening. I have the same passion for cooking as for fishing.
It is not just having good ingredients that make a great meal, it’s
paying attention to every little detail. One day, I decided to write
a book. A complete guide to fishing, cleaning, preparing, and
cooking fish, with all of the detail, tips and tricks. Hence came
the title of the book “Hook to Cook”. By now I had become proficient
at fishing. After another grand haul from the lake, celebrating with
cocktails I decided to throw a few things together in a bowl to be
used on that evenings feast. I called it Pistachio Encrusted
Canadian Bass. This was one of my best creations ever. Shortly
after, I obtained my captains license, and Debbie (My wife),
and myself began doing charters together. We decided to include a
shore lunch for our charter customers using our new found recipe.
Needles to say the customers where over whelmed by the delicious
taste of the fresh catch. We did all types of charters, from
fishing to dinner cruises. The cruises always included some type of
food with our infamous coating. The customers always said it was the
best they ever had and demanded that I bring my coating to market.
After three long years of my diligent research, long hours, hard
work, and a lot of trial and error, Hook to Cook Premium Coating are
now on the shelves of finer markets.
Sport fishing is truly an art combining passion, attention to
details, and creativity, which stimulate the senses with the thrill
of the catch. Cooking also takes passion, attention to details and
creativity to create art for the pallet. So when you care enough to
