I have been looking at all of the options for adding power steering to my
404. So far the best seems to be e-steering or (EHPA) as I found on the
web. Electronic hydraulic power assist. This system uses a electronic steering
sensor which can be placed on the steering column without cutting the shaft.
There are two ways this sensor can control the steering. The electronic sensor
can drive an electronic hydraulic control valve to direct power steering
fluid to one side or the other of the hydraulic assist cylinder. Power steering
fluid can be supplied and pressurized by either a mechanical pump or an electric
pump. The other way the sensor can work is to drive a electric power steering
pump forward or reverse, putting fluid to one side or the other. There is
allot more to it than that, but if you read through some of the links you'll
find out more how it works not all links are for E-Steering but these are all of
the links that I have saved while researching power steering for my mog. The are
some cars with e-steering and may be worth looking through the salvage yards for
parts. From what I have found so far I think I can find all of the pieces need
for around $500-$600. This is a little premature but since it was on the list I
thought some of you may be interested. I hope to have something installed by 2005.
