Unimog Hardtop Side Windows

Here are some pics of the side window that I made to go with my fiberglass hardtop. I made them out of white 3/8" PVC sheeting. This is very easy to work with and forms a strong bond when glued together with PVC cement found at you local Home Depot. The windows are sliding 1/4" tempered and laminate glass with a slight gray tint. I had the local glass shop make them from templates that I made from 1/4 masonite. the windows where about $35 each and there are 4 of them. I used 3/8" sheeting so that I could router a 1/4" recess  on the inside of the window frame on 3 different pieces for each complete window. I then glued the 3 pieces together with PVC cement. This formed two 1/4" tracks for the windows to slide in. I drilled out the 2 holes in the top of the door, where the soft top windows would fit in, to a 1/2". I was then able to use a 1/2" stainless steel bolt with the head cut off to mount the window. As you can see in the photos, once I had the windows completed I drilled two 1/2 " wholes in the bottom of the window that lined up with the wholes on the top of the door and siliconed the stainless bolts into the bottom of the window. I then placed the window on top of the doors, taped them to the top with the doors shut, and allowed the silicon to dry over night. The holes in the bottom of the windows where over size allowing for a slight angle in the window to fit to the top. The silicon surrounding the stainless bolt also acts as a rubber cushion for the window when opening and closing the door.
