When I'm finely done

  with the mog, I'm

  going to start on my

  chainsaw!

Here is a set of flare nut sockets and a ratchet handle that I used to adjust the valves on my 404.1   M180. This setup worked very well and took no time at all, once I bought the right type of crow foot socket.

First I read the Mog archives and read that a crow foot socket would work fine for adjusting the valves. So I picked up a metric set from the local discount auto store for about $15. The adjusting nuts where so stiff the 14mm crow foot snapped in half. (lifetime guarantee) Then I went and bought a Craftsmen set for $40. That just spread apart and slipped around the nut. I returned both sets for a refund. Then went back to the Mog archives to find out where to buy the HAZET 2770-2 tool. That was about $65 and the soonest I could get one was about a week. Then I read about the 14mm 6 point flare nut from Snap-On Tools. I called Snap-On to find a local dealer. I called the Detroit area main office and they didn't have it in stock. They referred me to a distributor in my area. I called them and there was no answer and I left a massage. The Mog was taken apart and I wanted to get the valves adjusted now. So I called the local auto parts store ( the one that has everything except the Hazet tool). They had a metric flare nut socket set in stock, 8 piece, 10m-18mm, for $18.50. I tried to use the flare nut socket the way it was, but it would not fit over the adjusting nut. So I ground the two front tabs off. (see pics) This took about 5 minutes and the socket works great. I have since seen these at other auto stores so you should be able to find a set near by. I think this sure beats the $65 Hazet plus shipping and the wait. Plus you get 7 other sockets that you can use.

If you have any questions you can email Mark Hagendorff .I will be posting more pics for valve adjusting soon.

Thanks for stopping by. See our Mog
